Double wall plate heat exchanger for Domestic hot water

For domestic hot water heating, the plate heat exchanger provides the system separation between the heating and potable water circuits required under DIN EN 1717, meeting the hygiene requirements for heating drinking water.

Two separately pressed plates sit in contact per heat transfer surface and are welded together only at the port openings. The open gap between the plates makes a leaking plate visible from the outside immediately.

The first choice whenever mixing of the two media must be ruled out by design - for system separation in domestic hot water or in food and pharmaceutical applications. Pressure and temperature range are tighter than for the welded design. The EPDM gaskets are matched to the medium of this application.

Monitorable without opening the unit: a leak shows at the gap before it can reach the system. Advice on materials and approvals directly from Düsseldorf.

Typical operating data and sizing

Heating domestic hot water through a separate heating circuit calls for system separation, since the heating water may carry water-treatment additives, inhibitors or corrosion protection that have no place in drinking water. A double-wall plate heat exchanger provides that separation without giving up a compact footprint.

Hard water tends to scale on heating. The online sizing deliberately applies no blanket fouling margin and states this on the data sheet; whether and how much scaling reserve makes sense is assessed by our engineering team when preparing the quote, based on the actual water hardness.

For legionella prevention under the relevant DVGW guidance, the system must occasionally reach an elevated temperature level. The online sizing covers a single operating point; the periodic high-temperature duty is taken into account as an additional load case during quote review.

Why a double-wall unit

In a drinking water application, a leaking plate must never connect the two circuits. The double plate layer with its open leakage gap makes a leak visible before heating water can reach the potable water network.

The frame stays bolted, just as in a gasketed design, and can be opened for maintenance and legionella checks without touching the system separation itself.
