How does a plate heat exchanger work?
Corrugated metal plates are stacked so two fluids flow through alternating channels, separated by the plate walls. Heat passes through the thin plates in counter-flow, transferring energy from the hot to the cold fluid without the two ever mixing. The corrugations create turbulence, which makes the transfer highly efficient in a compact unit.
Do the two media mix?
No. The media are separated by the plate walls; only heat crosses over. Where mixing must be absolutely excluded (e.g. drinking water), the double-wall design with a leak gap is used.
