High pressure and temperature resistance thanks to the absence of elastomer gaskets - the first choice in oil and gas as well as chemical and pharmaceutical processes, where hydrocarbons, acids, solvents, steam and thermal oil would attack any gasket. The gasket-free design suits the demanding pressure and temperature ranges of this application.
Low-maintenance, as there are no gaskets to age. Not disassemblable; cleaning is chemical (CIP).
Typical operating data and sizing
In chemical and pharmaceutical plants, welded plate heat exchangers temper reactors, condense solvent vapours, cool process streams and recover heat. Steam and thermal oil as heat transfer media regularly exceed the temperature limit of any elastomer gasket.
Concentration, temperature and possible phase change drive the sizing. With condensation, reliable condensate removal matters alongside the area; with thermal oil, the strongly temperature-dependent viscosity does.
Cleaning in place (CIP) requires complete drainability, sufficient channel velocity and the connections of the cleaning circuit to be part of the design.
Why a welded unit
With acids, alkalis and solvents the gasket is otherwise the weakest link: it sets the media and temperature limits long before the plate material reaches its own. Without it, the material alone decides.
Stainless steel 1.4404 (316L) covers a large share of process media; with chloride-bearing media, hydrochloric acid or oxidising acids, titanium or nickel-based alloys come into play. We never release a material automatically but always after reviewing concentration and temperature.
Where mixing of the two media has to be ruled out under all circumstances, the double wall type rather than the welded one is the right choice.
