Gasketed plate heat exchanger for Heating & district heating

In heating and district heating systems, plate heat exchangers separate the primary from the secondary circuit and transfer high outputs in a small footprint.

Bolted plate packs with elastomer gaskets between the plates. The number of plates can be adjusted afterwards and the unit can be fully disassembled.

Suitable for a wide pressure and temperature range, depending on the gasket selected. The first choice whenever cleaning, inspection or capacity adjustment is required. The EPDM gaskets are matched to the medium of this application.

Easy to service: plates and gaskets can be replaced individually and the pack remains expandable.

Typical operating data and sizing

In district heating substations the plate heat exchanger hydraulically separates the primary network from the building circuit. Typical regimes are 110 to 70 degrees Celsius supply on the primary side and 70/50 or 60/40 on the secondary side - with network pressures that often require PN16 or PN25.

Thanks to pure counter-current flow, temperature approaches of just a few Kelvin are economically achievable; the return temperature to the network stays low, which many utilities reward in their tariffs. Sizing targets the connected load with a pressure drop budget of typically 20 to 50 kPa per side.

A moderate fouling margin on the heat transfer area absorbs contamination from the network without oversizing the unit. Asymmetric flow rates - a wide temperature range on the primary, a narrow one on the secondary side - are unproblematic for plate units.

Why a gasketed unit

Heating networks carry magnetite, sludge and residual dirt. A gasketed unit can be opened, mechanically cleaned and inspected plate by plate - the decisive advantage for substations under maintenance contracts.

EPDM gaskets are the standard solution for hot water and permanently cover the usual network temperatures. If heat demand grows, the plate pack is simply extended with additional plates instead of replacing the unit.
