Welded plate heat exchanger for Oil & gas

In the oil and gas industry, fully welded plate heat exchangers transfer process heat where hydrocarbons attack any elastomer gasket - gasket-free, pressure-resistant and in a small footprint.

Fully welded plate packs without gaskets - pressure-resistant, temperature-resistant and permanently sealed. Plates in stainless steel 1.4301 (304) or 1.4404 (316L), connections as flange or welded nozzle.

High pressure and temperature resistance thanks to the absence of elastomer gaskets - the first choice in oil and gas as well as chemical and pharmaceutical processes, where hydrocarbons, acids, solvents, steam and thermal oil would attack any gasket. The gasket-free design suits the demanding pressure and temperature ranges of this application.

Low-maintenance, as there are no gaskets to age. Not disassemblable; cleaning is chemical (CIP).

Typical operating data and sizing

In the oil and gas industry, welded plate heat exchangers serve heat recovery, compressor and hydraulic cooling as well as intermediate circuits separating process and cooling media. Typical designs reach operating pressures up to 35 bar and temperatures from -50 to 300 degrees Celsius.

Hydrocarbons behave differently from water: lower thermal conductivity, considerably higher and strongly temperature-dependent viscosity. Both reduce heat transfer and raise pressure drop, so the sizing belongs on the real operating point rather than on water substitute values.

Pressure surges from fast-switching valves or cycling compressors load the weld seams more than a constantly high operating pressure. The real pressure profile therefore belongs in the inquiry, not just the nominal point.

Why a welded unit

Hydrocarbons attack elastomer gaskets, make them swell and considerably shorten their service life. Without a gasket this wear part disappears entirely; the limits are then set by plate material, weld seam and frame.

Compared with shell-and-tube units, the plate design saves considerable space and weight at the same duty. Because the pack cannot be opened, cleaning is chemical and in place (CIP) - the necessary connections should be provided from the outset.
