Gasketed plate heat exchanger for CHP units

In a combined heat and power (CHP) plant, the plate heat exchanger transfers the engine's waste heat from the cooling water circuit into the heating circuit - while keeping both systems hydraulically separated.

Bolted plate packs with elastomer gaskets between the plates. The number of plates can be adjusted afterwards and the unit can be fully disassembled.

Suitable for a wide pressure and temperature range, depending on the gasket selected. The first choice whenever cleaning, inspection or capacity adjustment is required. The EPDM gaskets are matched to the medium of this application.

Easy to service: plates and gaskets can be replaced individually and the pack remains expandable.

Typical operating data and sizing

In a CHP plant the plate heat exchanger transfers the engine's waste heat from the cooling water circuit into the heating circuit. Cooling water usually leaves the engine at 85 to 95 degrees Celsius while the heating circuit often runs at 70/50 - the usable temperature difference is correspondingly small, and sizing targets a temperature approach of just a few Kelvin in counter-current flow.

In many plants the engine circuit carries glycol and corrosion inhibitors. Glycol degrades heat transfer and raises viscosity; the share therefore belongs in the enquiry so the transfer area is not sized too tightly.

Sizing is based on the engine's full-load heat output, not on the average heating demand: if the network temporarily takes no heat, the heat extraction together with the emergency cooling must dissipate the full thermal output safely - otherwise the engine trips into safety shutdown.

Why a gasketed unit

Heating networks carry magnetite and residual dirt; the system separation keeps both away from the engine circuit and protects the cooling water quality specified by the engine manufacturer. A gasketed unit can be opened, mechanically cleaned and inspected plate by plate - a good match for the fixed maintenance intervals of a CHP plant.

EPDM gaskets permanently cover the temperatures of engine cooling. If the connected load grows, for example after an engine swap, the plate pack is extended with additional plates instead of replacing the unit.
